"A View From the Podium: Arguing Before the U.S. Supreme Court"

The Michigan Lawyer Chapter and the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law Student Chapter of the American Constitution Society present: "A View From the Podium: Arguing Before the U.S. Supreme Court."  This is a panel discussion featuring Elizabeth L. Jacobs, Attorney, Law Office of Elizabeth Jacobs; argued Howes v. Fields (2011) (examining whether Miranda warnings must be provided to inmates when they are being questioned about matters unrelated to their incarceration); Marla R. McCowan, Criminal Defense Resource Center Manager, Michigan State Appellate Defender Office; argued Renico v. Lett, 559 U.S. ___ (2010) (reversing the Sixth Circuit to find that the Michigan Supreme Court had not acted unreasonably in denying relief on double jeopardy grounds); Valerie R. Newman, Assistant Defender, Michigan State Appellate Defender Office; President, Board of Directors, Michigan Chapter of the American Constitution Society; Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Law, The University of Michigan Law School; argued Lafler v. Cooper (2011) (determining whether a defendant who rejects a plea agreement based on deficient advice from counsel and then is subsequently given a harsher sentence after being convicted by a jury after a fair trial can have that conviction overturned based on ineffective assistance of counsel and, if so, what is the proper remedy); and Peter Van Hoek, Assistant Defender, Michigan State Appellate Defender Office; Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Law, The University of Michigan Law School;  argued Michigan v. Bryant, 562 U.S. ___ (2011) (finding that a statement given to police by a wounded crime victim identifying the shooter is non-testimonial and can be admitted at trial, despite the fact that the victim is deceased because the police interrogation was to deal with an ongoing emergency and, thus, did not violate the Confrontation Clause).

The event is taking place on Thursday, January 19, 2012, 12:00 p.m., University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, Room 347
651 East Jefferson Avenue, Detroit, Michigan.
