SADO/MAACS - Forum with Michigan Supreme Court

At this session, faculty will explain the role of the Commissioners' Office and how an application travels through the Michigan Supreme Court. Faculty will share tips for Effective Advocacy in the Michigan Supreme Court and there will be time for questions and answers.

Faculty: Gary Rogers is a 1995 graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, but before that he received his Bachelor’s Degrees (physics & history) at THE Ohio State University (Go Bucks!). After doing contract work for SADO and Gleicher & Reynolds, PC, for about a year and a half, he became an Assistant Defender at SADO, where he worked from 1997 to 2004. Since then he has been a commissioner for the Michigan Supreme Court.

Faculty: Molly Hennessey was born and raised in Minnesota. She received her B.A. in English at Boston College and has a master’s degree in English and American literature from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She graduated summa cum laude from Michigan State University Law School in 2009. After graduation, she clerked for two terms for Michigan Supreme Court Justice Stephen Markman. She was an assistant prosecuting attorney at the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office from 2012 to 2017, where she ran district and circuit court dockets, prosecuted crimes against children and vulnerable adults, and was assigned to several treatment courts, including the 54A and 55th District Court sobriety courts and the 30th Circuit Court mental health court. Molly joined the Commissioner’s Office in 2017. She lives in East Lansing with her husband and three children, ages 13, 11, and 7.

Faculty: Christopher Smith is in his third year with the Supreme Court Commissioners’ Office. He previously worked as an assistant appellate defender with the State Appellate Defender Office in Lansing and, before that, with the Office of the State Appellate Defender in Chicago. He has also taught clinical courses at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, Wayne State University Law School, and the Michigan State University College of Law. He is a 2001 graduate of the University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business, where he earned a BBA in Finance. He graduated from the DePaul University College of Law in 2004.
