Thomas W. Cranmer - Vice-Chair of Commission

Mr. Cranmer, a former President of the State Bar of Michigan, is a Principal and Managing Director of Miller Canfield, Michigan’s largest law firm. With more than 35 years of courtroom experience, Mr. Cranmer’s practice focuses largely on white-collar criminal defense, complex commercial litigation and arbitration/facilitation matters. Over the years, he has repeatedly been recognized as one of Michigan’s leading trial lawyers.

Judith Gracey - Commissioner

Ms. Gracey is a prominent attorney with a diversified practice that includes defense of state and federal criminal defendants, centered in her Sylvan Lake office. A former president of the Oakland County Bar Association, Ms. Gracey has served on the State Bar of Michigan’s Criminal Justice Task Force and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee.

Douglas J. Messing - Commissioner

Doug Messing has worked for the Michigan Court of Appeals since 1989. He is currently the assistant director of the Research Division. He previously worked at the Court as a prehearing attorney, a judicial law clerk, a senior research attorney, and as supervisor of the senior research attorneys. He also previously worked as an attorney in private practice. He received his law degree from the Detroit College of Law in 1985.

Thomas McNeill - Commissioner

Mr. McNeill, 2011 President-Elect of the Federal Bar Association (Eastern District), is Practice Manager of the Commercial Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution Department of Dickinson Wright, the state’s fourth-largest law firm. Mr. McNeill has represented a large number of prominent companies and firms in securities and ERISA class actions, SEC investigations, and other business matters. Having tried 34 cases to verdict or award, he has compiled a record of winning 33 of those cases.

Thomas J. Adams - Commissioner

Thomas J. Adams is a native Detroiter with more than thirty years senior management experience. He is the President and owner of TJA Staffing Services, a full service Human Resources firm located in downtown Detroit. He is affiliated with more than twenty (20) community, civic and business organizations. He is the President of the Chance for Life Organization, a prison-based transformational program that earned him the 2009 Dahlberg Peace Award for the incomparable services him and his team has provided to the Michigan Department of Corrections for more than 20 years. He is also the Chairperson for Crime Stopper’s prison committee.

Hon. William Caprathe - Commissioner

Judge Caprathe was elected Circuit Judge in Bay County in 1980, and served until his retirement at the end of 2010. Prior to his election he was a trial attorney for 14 years. Currently he operates a Mediation and Facilitation business, in association with Professional Resolution Experts of Michigan , LLC. He is President of the Michigan retired judges Association and Chairs the Michigan Supreme Courts Criminal Jury Instructions Committee. For the State Bar of Michigan, he is Treasurer of the Criminal Law Section, a member of the Equal Access Initiative, and a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Council. Judge Caprathe continues to sit as an assigned Judge in all three of Michigan's Trial Courts.

Doug Mains - Commissioner

Mr. Mains is an attorney with Dykema Gossett PLLC, in Lansing, a position he has held since 2015.  Prior to joining Dykema, Mains was deputy legal counsel and senior policy advisor for the Michigan House Republican Policy Office. Mains earned his bachelor’s degree in government from Cornell University, his law degree from the University of Mississippi, and his Master of Laws degree from the University of Alabama.
