7th Judicial Circuit Court - Genesee County

The Court is composed of nine countywide elected judges.  Additional clerical, professional and administrative staff augments the number of employees to approximately 80. Through the Chief Judge, the court has oversight responsibility for the Friend of the Court, the Public Defender Program, Court Services Division, Financial Services Division, Jury Commission and the County Law Library.  Circuit Court Judges are elected to a staggered, six-year term, on a non-partisan basis. The Judges are responsible for the disposition of Civil, Criminal and Family cases.

Hours of operation

The Court is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, and is closed on Saturday and Sunday.

The Genesee County Clerks Office is open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, and is closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Defender Program

The Court Administrator also oversees the operations of the Defender Program.  The Defender Program appoints counsel for defendants who are charged with a felony and are financially unable to hire an attorney of their choice. Approximately 100 local attorneys serve on the roster for felony appointments in the Circuit Court, and approximately 2,000 appointments are made each year.

In addition, the office appoints counsel on paternity cases when the putative father is indigent, the misdemeanor population for the 67th District Court when indigency has been established; and contract attorneys in circuit court to represent defendants charged with probation violations, bench warrants, arraignments and extradition.

Drug Treatment Court

Drug Treatment Courts are specially designed dockets that attempt to reduce recidivism and substance abuse among nonviolent substance-abusing offenders.  This is accomplished by early, continuous and intense judicial supervision coupled with mandatory drug testing and the use of appropriate sanctions.

 The Genesee County Drug Courts consist of several program divisions.  These include Adult Felony Drug Court, Family Dependency Treatment Court and Juvenile Drug Court.  The Adult Felony Drug Court is grant funded through the Michigan Office of Drug Control Policy and the Michigan Supreme Court.  The Family Dependency Treatment Court is funded through the Michigan Supreme Court.  Both grants include a local Genesee County match.  The Juvenile Drug Court currently operates as a pilot program.
