Upcoming Workshops

SADO’s Project Reentry facilitates monthly workshops aimed at assisting formerly incarcerated individuals with essential life skills necessary for a successful transition home.

2023 Workshops

  1. Credit Basics, January 23, 2023: Attendees will learn how to build or repair credit and the impact of credit on their financial future.

  2. Self-Advocacy, February 27, 2023: Attendees will discuss tools and tips to ensure you're speaking up for yourself in relationships, job prospects, or with fellow employees.

  3. Homeownership, March 20, 2023. Attendees will learn tips, tricks, and strategies for first-time (and future) home buyers and sellers.

  4. Self-Publishing, April 24, 2023: Attendees will hear Marvin Cotton's self-publishing journey, including tools for their own self-publishing endeavors.

  5. Post-Traumatic Prison Disorder, May 22, 2023. Shawanna Vaughn of Silent Cry will lead attendees in a discussion of the effects of incarceration on mental health.

  6. Relationships - They're Everything, August 28, 2023, featuring Laura Sacks Kohn, MA LPC. Attendees will learn practical tools to build and improve relationships with the ones they care most about, one conversation at a time.

  7. FAFSA: What Is It? September 25, 2023, featuring Brian Green. Attendees will learn everything about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), including what it is and how to apply for and receive it.

  8. Ultimate Resume and Cover Letter Workshop, October 30, 2023, with presenter Steven Danbridge. Attendees will learn how to write a resume and cover letter that could land them the job of their dreams.

  9. Reentry Holiday Party, December 16, 2023: Attendees will reconnect with friends and family of the reentry community to share gratitude, memories, and accomplishments of the last year.

  1. Housing for Returning Citizens: Challenges, Solutions, and Resources, January 24, 2022.

  2. Let's Connect, June 27, 2022: Attendees will have the opportunity to share their goals, challenges, successes, and updates with their SADO comrades.

  3. End of Summer Gathering and Cookout, September 18, 2022. 

  4. Life Mapping Revisited November 14, 2022: Attendees will acquire tools to successfully make decisions and set personal and professional goals for the future.

  5. Holiday Hangout, December 18, 2022: Attendees gathered as a community to celebrate the end of the year, to mourn the losses of loved ones, and to encourage continued growth and renewal in the new year. 

2021 Workshops

  1. Goal Setting, January 24, 2021: The workshop focuses on the power of setting short and long-term goals.

  2. Rebranding: A New Approach to Success, February 21, 2021: The workshop focuses on improving job search and interview techniques.

  3. MichiganLegalHelp.org: An Introduction to Handling a Legal Issue on Your Own, March 21, 2021: The workshop focuses on learning how to use the Michigan Legal Help website to handle legal issues on your own.

  4. Michigan Reconnect: Tuition Free Assistance, April 18, 2021: The workshop focuses on a program providing tuition-free assistance to adults earning an associate's degree or postsecondary certificate in community college or a private training school.

  5. Welcome Home Workshop - How Can We Help? May 24, 2021: The workshop is especially designed for those who have recently returned home from incarceration. Attendees will learn about available resources and will have their specific questions and concerns addressed.

  6. Worker Protection Reentry Workshop: Wage and Hours, June 21, 2021: The US Department of Labor explained wage and medical leave protections and informed people how to file confidential complaints against unfair wage and hour labor practices.

  7. Cr8 the Space Workshop, July 19, 2021: The workshop features a conversation with Denzel Herrera-Davis, founder of Cr8 the Space, a marketplace and community that focuses on Black mental health.

  8. Roundtable with the Michigan Department of Corrections, September 13, 2021:The workshop is an opportunity for formerly incarcerated persons to dialogue with MDOC staff and team members about the experience of reentry and parole for the purpose of generating ideas to improve the reentry process.

  9. Practicing Gratitude, November 1, 2021: In this workshop, participants will discuss practicing gratitude and its benefits for mental health.

  10. End of Year Celebration, December 16, 2021: This is a time to celebrate the reentry community and all that has been accomplished, especially during these challenging times.

Workshop Date, Time, and Location

Pre-COVID, workshops were held at our Detroit office with an online livestream option available for those not in the Detroit area. During COVID, workshops are held online via Zoom. Workshops are typically held on the third Sunday of the month from 2-3:30 pm.

Who Can Attend?

All impacted individuals are welcome. Friends and family, community leaders and activists, students, and teachers, are also welcome.
