Op-Ed: Ensure kids in justice system have fair representation
Detroit Free Press, January 24, 2024
On January 24, SADO Director Jonathan Sacks and MAACS Administrator Bradley Hall published an op-ed in the Detroit Free Press, lauding the Legislature for enacting a package of legislation "to help alleviate the overincarceration of children and improve their prospects for success."
But Director Sacks and Administrator Hall also noted that the Legislature failed to pass HB 4630, "companion legislation that ensures children in our legal system also receive trained, qualified, and properly compensated lawyers after arrest and through trial." As they explained, this expansion is critical to address documented problems with Michigan's public legal defense system for children.
