REENTRY INVESTIGATION INTERN
Project Summary: SADO is seeking a Reentry Intern to work with SADO’s Project Reentry. SADO is the only statewide public defender office in Michigan, and our mission is to provide cost-efficient, high-quality, timely, public appellate defense services to indigent individuals convicted of felonies. Project Reentry is an innovative program that assists clients in preparing for resentencing, parole, and reentry back into society following lengthy stays of incarceration. SADO’s Project Reentry is currently focused on serving our large juvenile lifer client population and addressing the unique challenges and needs of clients who entered prison as children and are leaving as adults. The Reentry Investigation Intern will work directly with members of the Project Reentry team, including the Project Manager, Reentry Coordinator, and a team of Masters of Social Work (MSW) interns.
Major Areas of Responsibility
- Research new agencies, resources, partners, and opportunities across Michigan that meet the needs of reentering citizens
- Make telephone or in-person contact with agencies and partners to confirm service availability, eligibility requirements, and accessibility to those with criminal backgrounds
- Update online and electronic databases with collected information
- Audit and update existing reentry resources already identified in SADO’s online reentry database
- When possible, attend community meetings relating to reentry and criminal justice issues and establish connections with service providers and community members
- Conduct follow-up telephone or in-person interviews with clients who have used resources referred by Project Reentry
- Organize client electronic and paper client files
- Collect and maintain data as requested by the Project Manager
- Assist Project Reentry team members with necessary projects as requested by Project Manager
- This is an unpaid internship
- Internship openings are available immediately
- A minimum of 8 hours per week is required
- Can work occasionally from home, but occasional presence in the Detroit office is required
- Must have own laptop and reliable form of transportation
- High School Diploma or GED
- Committed to social justice
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe
- Excellent communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail are required
- Experience working with vulnerable populations, especially those incarcerated or formerly incarcerated
- Experience with community engagement, criminal justice, and or/economic justice
- Personal or professional background in social work, law, sociology, criminal justice, psychology or related field
